From the Library

We read a terrific book together in second grade, Lloyd Alexander's The Fortune Tellers. It is gorgeously illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman. Second graders were delighted and exasperated by the fortune-teller's predictions. "Will I be famous?" asks the young carpenter. "No question about it," said the fortune-teller, "once you become well known." "Amazing!" said the carpenter. "But, now tell me: Will I marry and be happy ever after?" "You shall wed your true love," said the fortune-teller, "if you find her and she agrees. And you shall be happy as any in the world if you can avoid being miserable."
Lloyd Alexander is himself well-known for his Black Cauldron series about Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper. (The Book of Three is the first in the series) If you have a long stretch of time for family reading, these novels make for a great literary adventure.

French: Au café

The girls are learning how to say different drinks and how to order them at a café. This lends itself perfectly to restaurant skits. The girls are enjoying pretending to be waitresses and customers who greet each other, ask and say what they would like to drink, and say "thank you" and "you're welcome." As you can see in the pictures below, their performances are never lacking in personality!

Happenings in Second Grade

The fall is flying by in second grade and we have been very busy! From Spirit Day, our Zoo field trip, and Halloween we have had a lot of fun as a class.  Here are some pictures to show you what we have been up to this month!

GO BRYN MAWR!

The girls waiting for the Spirit Day Parade.  They were very excited to show off their green and yellow and cheer for the Bryn Mawr Mawrtians!

Spirit Day pep rally

Last week we visited the Baltimore Zoo to continue our study of habitats. The girls worked very hard while observing different animal habitats.  They were able to take notes and pictures using their iPads.  We were very lucky and got to see the brand new penguin exhibit. The girls concluded that the penguins are lucky animals and that their new habitat at the zoo is great!  Here are some pictures of the girls in action at the zoo.

Halloween was also a special day in second grade. The girls had a lot of fun walking in the costume parade and enjoyed our treats at the Halloween party.  We hope you all had a safe and Happy Halloween!
